Morgan’s Raid

PAULEY: Morgan’s Raid, the largest Civil War campaign in Indiana began on July 8th, 1863 as Confederate General John Hunt Morgan led rebel Raiders across the Ohio River. Overpowering Corydon, Salem, Versailles and other Indiana towns burning Railroad bridges, looting and demanding horses.

PAULEY: Though his colorful reputation made him something of a celebrity, a call to arms by Governor Oliver Morton brought 30,000 Hoosiers ready for battle through five days in Indiana, Morgan left destruction in his path but in the end was defeated and captured by Union forces.
