National History Day in Indiana

National History Day in Indiana is an affiliate of National History Day®. Students in grades four through twelve research and present a project on a historical topic that fits under the annual theme. Whether you compete at a contest or not, the Indiana Historical Society has resources to help you research and create your project. Check out all the resources available to you below.

The National History Day in Indiana State Contest will be held in person on Saturday, April 20, 2024, at Marian University. See the Contest Page for more information and to register by competing at a regional contest!

About National History Day in Indiana


  • Develop a thesis about a historical topic.
  • Use primary and secondary sources to support their thesis.
  • Develop research skills through a project-based learning opportunity.
  • Take ownership of their learning by researching topics important to them.
  • Work independently or collaboratively on a project.
  • Compete at school, regional, state and even the national contest.


  • Adapt the program to fit curriculum needs.
  • Use NHDI as a basis for an in-class project.
  • Define topics or project types to enhance a unit.
  • Use NHDI in many different subjects.
  • Use NHDI to help students accomplish individualized learning goals.
