PAULEY: You might say the standard of Hollywood glamour was born in Fort Wayne, Indiana. Jane Alice Peters was born in Fort Wayne but it was in Hollywood where she gained her fame as Carole Lombard.

PAULEY: Her single mother moved the family to Los Angeles when she was 6. At 12 she made her screen debut and by the late 1930s was the highest paid star in Hollywood. Gorgeous, witty and funny.

PAULEY: In 1930, she married Clark Gable, becoming perhaps Hollywood’s first super couple.

PAULEY: In 1942, she gave her life for her country. Returning from Indianapolis on a war bond drive in which she raised 2 million dollars, her plane crashed in Nevada. She was 33.
