From the Cataloger’s Desk: Raise a Glass!

October 23, 2019

For me, this time of year is all about celebrations. Not only are we celebrating birthdays and anniversaries in my family, but we’re also looking forward to the holidays. Halloween, Thanksgiving and Christmas are just around the corner, and before you know it, we’ll be ringing in the New Year. I recently cataloged a pamphlet that might come in handy for this season’s upcoming parties and family get-togethers: Toasts and Sentiments, presented and published by the Indianapolis Brewing Company in 1913.

The Indianapolis Brewing Company was formed in 1889, after the consolidation of three local breweries: C.F. Schmidt, P. Lieber and C. Maus. It was a highly successful business, becoming one of the nation’s largest breweries and winning prestigious awards. Unfortunately, it was closed in 1948, when the owner went to prison for selling short-filled bottles. Yikes!

The material in this pamphlet was selected from many sources, and credit is given wherever possible. Although it was compiled more than a century ago, the themes and sentiments are still relevant in today’s world. The toasts celebrate friendship, love and family for the most part, with only a few random topics creeping in here and there. While some are incredibly heartfelt, others are downright hilarious. There’s certainly something for everyone – and every type of event.

If you find yourself needing material for an upcoming birthday party, wedding reception, or holiday dinner, stop by the IHS library for some inspiration. Your family and friends will no doubt enjoy a speech full of warmth, charm and wit from Toasts and sentiments!

The catalog record for this item can be found here.
