INDIANAPOLIS (July 30, 2025) — The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) is pleased to announce the appointment of Jeanene H. Letcher as the new county historian for Lake County.
Letcher currently serves as President and Historian of the Lake County Historical Society and is the Indiana Room Specialist at the Crown Point Community Library. She holds both Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in History, with concentrations in historic preservation, museum studies, and archival studies.
With more than 30 years of archival and research experience, Letcher is deeply committed to preserving and sharing local history. She brings her expertise to the community through historical tours, genealogical research, and a lifelong passion for storytelling.
The Indiana Historical Society congratulates Jeanene H. Letcher on her appointment and looks forward to the continued preservation and celebration of Lake County’s rich history through her leadership.
In 1981, through an effort to improve the historical communication network in the state, the Indiana Historical Society and the Indiana Historical Bureau established the Indiana County Historian Program. County historians serve as volunteers appointed by the Indiana Historical Society and Indiana Historical Bureau to promote local history in their counties, connect individuals and groups with history resources, promote collaboration between local history organizations and maintain connections with the Indiana Historical Society and Indiana Historical Bureau.
