Indiana Historical Society to Open New Exhibit, Hoosier Voices from Vietnam

September 22, 2025

The Indiana Historical Society is proud to announce its newest exhibit, Hoosier Voices from Vietnam, which shares the history and importance of those from Indiana who served in the Vietnam War. The exhibit will open on Saturday, Sept. 27, at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center.

Through newly recorded and archival interviews, artifacts and other materials, Hoosier Voices from Vietnam will highlight the personal experiences of Indiana men and women who served during the Vietnam War. Visitors will hear directly from veterans of the Marine Corps, Air Force, Navy and Army, as well as those who contributed through support roles such as the United Service Organizations (USO) and American Red Cross.

The exhibit opens with a memorial wall displaying the names of the 1,525 Hoosiers who were killed or reported missing in action, serving as a powerful reminder of the sacrifices made by Indiana families. Guests will also step into an interactive space featuring a wall of letters written home from Hoosiers stationed in Vietnam, offering a glimpse into daily life, connection with loved ones, and the realities of war.

Artifacts, photographs and oral histories — including items on loan from individuals like Major General Harry W. Brooks, Jr., a decorated Indianapolis native who served nearly three decades in the U.S. Army — will provide context and depth to the stories. The exhibit coincides with the 50th anniversary of the fall of Saigon, inviting reflection on how Indiana continues to honor and preserve the legacy of Vietnam veterans.

“There is no one story of the Vietnam War,” said Jody Blankenship, IHS President and CEO. “Each person’s experience was shaped by so many factors—where they were stationed, the battles they fought, the people they served alongside. We’re proud to make room for Hoosier veterans to share their stories with us in their own words.”

Hoosier Voices from Vietnam will open on Sept. 27 and run through Jan. 23, 2027. The exhibit is presented by the Carter Family Fund, with additional support from Ayres Foundation, Inc., Nicholas H. Noyes, Jr., Memorial Foundation Inc., and Arthur Jordan Foundation.

The Indiana Historical Society is open Tuesday-Saturday from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Free parking is included with admission and is accessible from New York Street.
