April 8 – Rachel Serago, making Koulourakia | Greek | Included with admission
Food is a universal connector. It connects us to each other, reminds us of our past, and introduces us to new cultures. The dishes we eat are flavored by the communities and cultures that call Indiana home. Take a break to enjoy the stories and smells of the dishes that make up our food heritage. Each month features a presenter sharing their food culture in this engaging and interactive conversation. Copies of recipes will be provided for guests to create at home! Presentations begin promptly at 1 p.m. and are not repeated during the scheduled time.
Rachel Serago is the great-granddaughter of Greek immigrants. She loves keeping her family recipes alive by cooking their Greek dishes, and her two children are learning to “add oregano like you mean it!” Rachel is an instructional designer and facilitates literacy programs at Indy Reads in her spare time.
Koulourakia (koo-loo-rah-KEE-uh) simply means “cookies” in Greek, so they must be the Greek cookies! While these twisted butter cookies are traditional Easter treats (or perfect paired with coffee any day!), their history dates back to the Minoan Civilization in Crete and they became a popular street food in the Byzantine and Ottoman periods.
