Hoosier Latino Celebration – Free Admission

11 a.m. – 4 p.m. | Museum Exhibits open 10 a.m. – 5 p.m.

Explore how Latino communities have influenced Indiana for more than 100 years. Through performances, hands-on activities, and cooking demonstrations, your whole family will have the opportunity to experience a variety of ways we see and celebrate Latino culture today.

Enjoy lunch at the Stardust Terrace Cafe while listening to the sounds of local band Alboroto. Follow your nose to Lilly Hall at 12:30, where Ivone Razzino will make a recipe from her home country of Colombia in a special Flavors of the Heartland – don’t forget to grab a copy of the recipe to try at home!

Take a break in the Frank and Katrina Basile Theater to watch the recent documentary production of Beyond el Barrio: Early Cultural Contributions to the City of Indianapolis, Seen and Unseen. Don’t miss the final showing of the day at 3 p.m., which will be followed by a lecture and conversation with documentary director and IHS Multicultural Collections Curator Nicole Martinez-LeGrand.  

Activities will end at 4 p.m.; museum exhibits will remain open until 5 p.m.

12:30 p.m. – Flavors of the Heartland with Ivone Razzino, making a Colombian dish

1 p.m. – Beyond el Barrio screening in the Frank and Katrina Basile Theater (23 minutes)

1:30 p.m. – Performance by Alboroto on the Stardust Terrace (weather permitting)

2:00 p.m. – Beyond el Barrio screening in the Frank and Katrina Basile Theater (23 minutes)

3:00 p.m. – Beyond el Barrio screening in the Frank and Katrina Basile Theater (23 minutes) with special presentation by documentary director and Multi-Cultural Collections Curator Nicole Martinez-LeGrand

Activities Include

  • Papel Picado – make your own papel picado using tissue paper and dowel rods
  • Magnet Making – use IHS collections images celebrating Hoosier Latino history to create your own magnet
  • Weaving – inspired by Abuela’s Weave by Omar S. Castañeda, make your own woven artwork
  • Loteria – play a game of loteria, the Mexican game of chance
