September 9 – Daniel Del Real, making Gorditas & Salsa | Mexican | Included with admission
Food is a universal connector. It connects us to each other, reminds us of our past, and introduces us to new cultures. The dishes we eat are flavored by the communities and cultures that call Indiana home. Take a break to enjoy the stories and smells of the dishes that make up our food heritage. Each month features a presenter sharing their food culture in this engaging and interactive conversation. Copies of recipes will be provided for guests to create at home! Presentations begin promptly at 1 p.m. and are not repeated during the scheduled time.
Daniel Del Real is a Mexican artist and curator based out of Indianapolis. With a background in graphic design and community engagement, Daniel works to bring art to underserved communities through his art and curatorial work. Del Real’s work has been shown locally and nationally, centering his culture through pop art. He currently works as a curator at Indy’s Global Village, where he engages with communities from all over the world. He hopes to raise awareness for the diverse cultures that reside in our communities and encourages his audiences to get out of their comfort zones to engage with them. Daniel’s future projects include Mexican-inspired pottery, a jewelry collection, and new works in his ongoing Giant Mexicanadas art series.
Gorditas are a corn patty made by patting masa similarly to a tortilla, but much thicker. It is cooked on a skillet and then stuffed with a filling. Daniel will be stuffing his gorditas with queso fresco and garnished with fresh-made salsa de molcajete, a flavorful salsa made using a Mexican mortar and pestle.
