INSPIRED BY AMERICA
Program:
Jesse Montgomery | Strum
George Walker | Quartet No. 1, II. Molto adagio
Ben Johnston | Amazing Grace (1980)
Dvo?ák | Quartet in G Major, Op. 106
Aeolus Quartet performances are acclaimed for both “high-octane” excitement (Strad) and “dusky lyricism” (New York Times). This richly varied program includes works by a trio of American composers, two award winning African American composers and one of the foremost composers of microtonal music, all rooted in the American folk and spiritual idioms. Antonín Dvo?ák hoped the future of classical music in the New World would be with composers like these three using their own musical traditions for inspiration. The Opus 106 Quartet is an extraordinary work by any measure. Unmistakable for its endearing lyricism, exciting rhythmic vitality and vibrant color.
