Preparing for National History Day in Indiana at Marian University

March 29, 2022

The Indiana Historical Society is excited to announce that the National History Day in Indiana State Contest is in-person this year! After a couple of years of being virtual due to the Covid-19 pandemic, students from across the state of Indiana will gather at Marian University (located on the near northwest side of Indianapolis). On April 30, students will compete and show off the hard work that they have done with their National History Day projects! This year students have been exploring the annual theme: Debate and Diplomacy: Successes, Failures, and Consequences in History.

On Wednesday, March 23, members of the IHS education team visited Marian University. We met with the staff at Marian and took a tour of the campus. It was a good way for us to get ready for the contest and to make sure we can provide students, teachers, judges and parents with a fun contest day.

We also had our first peak where the awards ceremony will be held on the day of the contest. This is where the students will eagerly anticipate hearing where their projects are placed and what awards they have received! For the lucky few it means advancing to the National Competition, held virtually in June this year.

The buildings for the event are all located near each other on Campus. The action of the day will never be far away. The education team was happy to demonstrate how to get around the day of the contest!

Staff also toured the different spaces where students will present their projects. The perfect rooms were picked to make sure to give the students the best chance to present their projects to the judges who will be viewing and evaluating them.

We are looking forward to being able to support our Hoosier students, teachers and families with this wonderful experience. If you are interested in viewing the projects in person and want to attend a live event, then we have a fulfilling job for you! Judges are always needed! Join us on April 30 to experience National History Day in Indiana in person. If you are interested in being a judge for National History Day in Indiana, sign up here.

If you have any questions about judging, please contact nhdi@indianahistory.org.  We look forward to seeing you at Marian University on April 30 for our first in-person State Contest since 2019!
