The Christmas Pickle
A Weihnachtsgurke, or Christmas pickle, is an ornamental pickle that is hidden on a Christmas tree during the holiday season. Some families use it as an incentive with the first person to find it receiving a special prize, like an extra gift or a year of good luck. This tradition is most popular in the United States and is often mistakenly believed to have originated in Germany, but it is more likely a 19th-century American invention.
During Festival of Trees at Indiana Historical Society, visitors can take part in a Weihnachtsgurke scavenger hunt throughout the building. Ten pickle ornaments are hidden in the trees. Can you find them?
