Ask us anything!

Use our experienced staff to help you manage your local history organization.

We offer help in solving all kinds of problems from the mundane to the bizarre. (We especially enjoy answering odd questions.) If IHS staff doesn’t have the answer, the Local History Services team will use our statewide, regional and national connections to find a solution. We are seldom stumped!

Discuss current challenges facing your organization with the LHS team or schedule on-site visits for informal assessments of collections care, facilities or exhibits. We’d also be happy to consult with your committees, boards or other groups on site or at the History Center.

Contact us at localhistoryservices@indianahistory.org or (317) 234-0170 to ask a question or set up a site visit.

Site Visits

During a free one-day visit, participating sites receive in-depth, specialized training on collections care and fundraising for collections.

Organization-specific training may include:

  • Basic handling and storage techniques
  • Basic environmental concerns, building condition and maintenance
  • Assessing the collection
  • Using condition surveys to develop and implement a conservation plan
  • Determining archival storage equipment and supply needs
  • Using proper display conditions and techniques
  • Preparing for fundraising
  • Developing a collections policy

Each organization will receive a free starter kit of collections care training resources and materials (worth approximately $100).

Limited number of site visits available. They will be scheduled on a first-come, first-served basis.

To schedule a site visit or to find out more, download the brochure or contact Karen DePauw at  or (317) 233-3110.

This project is supported in part by a grant from the Institute of Museum and LIbrary Services.
