Reflections from a Young Hoosier Author

January 20, 2023

Being an author at 12 is really amazing and fun! One of the things I like most about it is getting to write with my grandma. At first, the hardest part was coming up with good ideas for each chapter, but now it is easier.

It was very cool that I got to go to the Indiana Historical Society’s 2022 Holiday Author Fair. It was fun selling and signing my books. I could not believe that I got to sit next to Troy Cummings! I have read all of his books! He even drew a picture on one of the books I bought. The other authors were so kind to me, too, and some even wanted to buy my books. I enjoyed talking to people about my books, and I hope that I can do this again next year! I have never had so many people want to buy our book!

It helped that I had so many people encouraging me to write, including my parents, my grandparents, and my teachers. The school and public librarians have also helped by putting our books in their libraries. My elementary school had a book signing for us, too. My grandma and I published our first book, “Maybe, Just Maybe” in 2020. We co-wrote “Maybe, Just Maybe” when I was in third grade. I had always wanted to be an author like my grandma, Mary Ann Koontz. We published our second book, “Something’s Strange at Camp Wonder Woods” in 2022.

Maybe, just maybe there will be a third one …

Hailey Landreth is a twelve-year-old author, who dances four days a week. In her free time, she enjoys spending time with her family, her cat, Lulu, and her dog, Rosie. She also enjoys riding her electric scooter, eating sushi, going camping, and hanging out with her friends.
