The Ku Klux Klan utilized intimidation, violence, and the ballot box to grip the Heartland in the 1920s, leaving a legacy with implications stretching to today and beyond.

Join Dr. James H. Madison as he shares insights from his latest book which examines the Klan’s operations in Indiana and the Midwest. Madison will discuss the Klan’s roots, development, and motivations as they sought to answer “Who is an American.”

James H. Madison is the author of many books, including Hoosiers: A New History of Indiana. He is also the Thomas and Kathryn Miller Professor of History Emeritus, Indiana University Bloomington. Madison began teaching Indiana history in 1976 and has lectured and consulted widely on Indiana topics.

The Ku Klux Klan in the Heartland is published by Indiana University Press.

Guests purchasing a book will have the option of adding an inscription from the author. An inscription will not be required for purchase; books will not arrive in time for the program. Guests may purchase program registration with or without a book.
