Indiana Historical Society Statement on Protests

June 4, 2020

Our country and the State of Indiana are now being reminded of our more than 400 year-long and deep history of systemic racism and oppression of Black Americans. The Indiana Historical Society stands with the Black community against racism and the killing of unarmed Black citizens.

History is critically important. It has the power to unite us in our ongoing desire to build a better future. By listening, learning and striving to understand, we will continue to hold conversations about our history and how that history has shaped our current world. Without change, our state, nation, and society will not be able to overcome the weight of its own violent and racist history.

The Indiana Historical Society is committed to be a valuable resource by documenting, preserving and sharing our state’s history, from all perspectives, and in all its complexity. We hope that everyone will continue to help guide us in providing knowledge of the past and working to build a more just and equitable society in the future.
