IHS Workshops Get Genealogists Started, Set Generational Timelines

Indianapolis—Summer is a great time to
work on gathering and organizing family history, and the Indiana Historical
Society (IHS), will offer a two workshops this summer that can help with those
efforts—Timelines on June 22 and Start With What You Know on July 27. Both
programs will take place throughout the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana
History Center, located at 450 W. Ohio St. in downtown Indianapolis.

Timelines, offered June 22 from 10 a.m. to noon, is designed to help
attendees enhance the personal chronology of their ancestors with relative
historical events, which creates a timeline that shows where the generations
meet. This pragmatic perspective of looking at the facts in a different way can
set the stage for individuals to write their own life stories and provide a
guide for further family history research. Explore online sources of
historical data to verify and supplement the life history of your ancestors.

The presenter, Betty L. Warren, is past president
of the Indiana Genealogical Society and earned professional credentials as a
genealogist from Brigham Young University. She is a recipient of the Willard C.
Heiss Family History Award, which is presented annually by IHS.

Start With What You Know, offered July 27 from 10 a.m. to noon, is
the best advice a new genealogist can receive. Attendees will be instructed on
how to interview relatives, as well as what questions to ask, and then learn
about the beginning steps to research. They will also find out how to confirm
the information collected using a number of record groups and resources.

Presenters are Allison
DePrey and Kendra Clauser. DePrey is the current Assistant Coordinator for
Education and Community Engagement at IHS, having previously served as a
collections assistant for reference services at IHS’s William Henry Smith
Memorial Library. Clauser is the Oral History Project Archivist for IHS, and
her current Indiana Community Builders project requires frequent
research using genealogical applications.

Cost of each workshop
session is $10 for the general public and $8 for IHS members, which includes
parking and admission to Indiana Experience the day of the program. Each
class is eligible for two general LEUs.
