IHS Issues Call for NHDI Volunteer Judges

January 31, 2017

Indianapolis—The Indiana Historical Society (IHS) is issuing a call for volunteer judges to take part in the 2017 National History Day in Indiana (NHDI) contests. This year, the need is greater than ever with the addition of a new regional contest at Hanover College (March 18).

Also for the first time, the Indianapolis Public Schools contest (March 15) will be held at the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, home of IHS and the Indiana Experience.

In addition, judges are needed at four annual regional contests in Notre Dame, Ind. (Feb. 25), Indianapolis (March 11), Nashville (April 1) and Evansville (April 8), as well as the state competition at Ivy Tech’s campus in downtown Indianapolis (May 6).

This year, more than 5,400 students are expected to participate in NHDI, creating projects in the form of documentaries, exhibits, papers, performances and websites. This year’s theme is Taking a Stand in History.

At the contests, volunteer judges will work in teams to evaluate projects, interview students and rank winners. Regional winners will advance to state, where students can win special prizes for Indiana history topics. The top two entries from each junior and senior category at state are also eligible to compete in The Kenneth E. Behring National History Day Contest in June at the University of Maryland.

Typically, NHDI judges have a background or interest in education, social studies or media. Teachers who volunteer as judges will be eligible for Professional Growth Points (PGPs) from IHS. Registration is open online at www.indianahistory.org/historyday.

NHDI contests are sponsored by IHS, with support from the Hoover Family Foundation, the Richard W. and Irene Rooker Family Foundation, the TCU Foundation and the Vigran Family Foundation. For more information on NHDI and other IHS programs, call (317) 232-1882.
