How did the English language become distinctly American and how did it travel back across the Atlantic to reshape the language where it began? American English: A Tale of Three Journeys explores the revolutionary power of language through three sweeping migrations that span more than 400 years of history.

From its first journey across the ocean with British colonists, to its expansion across a growing nation of fifty states, to its surprising return voyage influencing modern British speech, this program is a story of movement, adaptation, and cultural exchange.

Through engaging stories, historical insights, and vivid examples, this presentation traces how everyday words, accents, and expressions reflect the people and events that shaped them. Discover how language evolved alongside the nation itself by absorbing influences, crossing borders, and ultimately redefining what it means to speak “American.”

Join Laurence Brown (YouTuber @LostinthePond) for a fascinating exploration of language as a living artifact of history – one that continues to travel, transform, and connect us today.

Sign up for the Meet-and-Greet with Laurence immediately following the presentation! Refreshments will be provided.
