Kick-off to May at the Indiana Historical Society Celebrates History of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing”

April 24, 2023

On Saturday, April 29, the Indiana Historical Society (IHS) partners with Indianapolis Motor Speedway on a special “Kick-off to May” event to celebrate the history of “The Greatest Spectacle in Racing.”

IHS invites guests to the Eugene and Marilyn Glick Indiana History Center, located at 450 W. Ohio St. in downtown Indianapolis, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 29 to take part in a variety of educational activities, check out artifacts from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and get a photo in Rick Mears’ 1980 Penske PC-9 Indy car (weather dependent).

“In the Basile Theater, we are going to have a rotation of videos from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum explaining significant Indy 500 traditions,” said IHS Manager of Engagement Casey Terry. “There will also be an appearance from legendary broadcaster Paul Page to talk about his book as well as the world premiere of the Harrison Center’s Porch Party Indy annual video.”

Paul Page will be signing his book, “Hello, I’m Paul Page: It’s Race Day in Indianapolis,” which will be available for purchase in the Basile History Market.

Guests can also test out toy cars on three different surfaces that simulate the various materials the Speedway has been made of — crushed rock and tar; brick; and asphalt. In addition, attendees can pick up an exclusive porch décor kit from the Indianapolis Motor Speedway and help decorate the Harrison Center Porch display. Race fans will also have the opportunity to see the official unveiling of the Welcome Race Fans artwork commissioned for this year’s Indianapolis 500.

All activities are included with regular museum admission. “Kick-off to May” is presented in partnership with Indianapolis Motor Speedway, Indianapolis Motor Speedway Museum and the Harrison Center.
