Registration Open for 2022 Midwestern Roots Genealogy Conference
Registration is now open for the 2022 Midwestern Roots research conference presented by the Indiana Historical Society (IHS), taking place Friday, July 15 and Saturday, July 16, with a pre-conference on Thursday, July 14, at Indianapolis Marriott East, located at 7202 E. 21st Street.
Midwestern Roots aims to connect people to their family story with a regional focus — with three days of learning, in-person networking and fun around discovering and sharing the past.
“For Midwestern Roots 2022, we will explore how immigration and migration have impacted the story of the Midwest, diving into how food, music, fine art and clothing can be pathways to the movements of people across the nation,” said Lauren Peightel, IHS coordinator for Genealogy and Family History Programs and co-chair of Midwestern Roots. “We’ll be learning more about the history and people of communities we love.”
The conference includes different session formats and lengths, storytellers with different backgrounds and experiences, an invigorated vendor hall and a thoughtful thematic menu. There are also special events like the following:
- Myaamia Kinship and Generational Memory — A Special Luncheon with Diana Hunter of the Miami Tribe of Oklahoma. Forced removals separated Myaamia (Miami) families in the mid-19th century, and yet, many families maintained connections, sometimes through physical presence to each other and even more often through memories of who we are, who our ancestors were and how we are still connected today as the Myaamiaki (Miami people).
- Everybody Came from Somewhere: The Mixing Bowl of What We Eat. Follow along on a journey with featured storyteller Tim Pinnick and Indiana Historical Society Museum Theater staff in taste and sound as you travel from West Africa to the American coastline and on to the Midwest.
Registration opens Wednesday, March 23 — interested individuals should register before June 15 to lock in early pricing options.
