The “Christmas” tree originated in Germany, and German immigrants brought the Tannenbaum to America in the late 1800s. Our tree exhibits traditional German-American decor.

O’ Hoosier Tannenbaum

Designer: German Cultural Societies of Indianapolis

  • Candles with tin holders representing traditional lit wax candles on an authentic Tannenbaum
  • Wooden cut ornaments from woodworkers in the Erzgebirge
  • Baumschmuck or "tree jewelry," authentic blown glass German ornaments
  • Flags from all German states and regions — the homelands of thousands of Hoosiers
  • The Maibaum, a scaled down replica of the “May Pole” from the GAK Biergarten in German Park in Indianapolis
  • Handmade Fröbelsterne or “Froebel’s stars," traditional decorations credited to Kindergarten school originator Friedrich Fröbel
