The Miró String Quartet explored three historic quartet programs on prominent chamber music series from 1910, 1929, and 1935 as part of their Archive Project. As it turns out, all three quartets, the Kneisel, Flonzaley, and Kolisch appeared in Indianapolis before the formation of Ensemble Music Society. We are presenting the Kolisch Quartet’s program from April 1935 at the Library of Congress.

The Kolisch Quartet’s program is unique in the large first-half offering of Beethoven’s Op. 130 with the Grosse Fuge, but even more so because this was the world premiere of Bartók’s Quartet No. 5 and the North American premiere of Berg’s Lyric Suite.

The 1935 Program:
Beethoven Quartet in B-flat Major, Op. 130, with Grosse Fuge, Op. 133
Berg Lyric Suite (North American premiere)
Bartók Quartet No. 5 (World premiere)
