Upcoming Family History Programs

Potpourri of Sources
Jan. 30, 10 a.m. to noon
$10, $8 for IHS members

Finding primary sources is the goal of every genealogist. Sue Dillon will share her collection of more than 70 documents to trace the colorful life of Turner Christian, a Revolutionary War leader tried for “feloniously murdering” his wife. Through this case study, you will learn how and where Turner’s tracks were found – in wills, deeds, marriage bonds, militia promotions, court order books, poll lists, tax records, land patents/grants, land lotteries and online.

A native of Noblesville and graduate of DePauw University, Sue combined her teaching background with her passion for genealogy to create her popular five-week “Finding Family” genealogy course taught at the Carmel’s Monon Center.

Get Started on Your Family Tree
Feb. 26 or Feb. 27, 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.
$35, $25 for IHS members, $15 for students younger than 23 with current ID
Register by Feb. 19

Genealogy expert Betty Warren will tell you what you need to know about unlocking your family’s past.

You’ll get an overview of the basic reference tools needed for family history research, including censuses, vital records (birth, death, marriage), court records, naturalization records, and church and cemetery records. The workshop will also help you organize your information with discussions on note-taking techniques, logging research and using ancestor charts.

Tours of the Indiana State Library Genealogy Collection and the History Center’s William Henry Smith Memorial Library, along with overviews of their resources, will wrap up the day.

Betty L. Warren, past president of the Indiana Genealogical Society earned professional certification as a genealogist from Brigham Young University. She is a recipient of the IHS Willard C. Heiss Family History Award.
