NOTES: This collection contains oral histories recorded for a project undertaken as part of Indiana Heritage Research Grant #93-3013. The grantee was the Michigan City Public Library, 100 E. Fourth St, Michigan City, Indiana. The project was co-sponsored by the LaPorte County Historical Society, County Complex, LaPorte, Indiana.


HISTORICAL SKETCH

The Michigan City Public Library and the LaPorte County Historical Society received an Indiana Heritage Research Grant (IHRG) from the Indiana Humanities Council and the Indiana Historical Society. The purpose of the grant was to document the history of railroading and aviation in Michigan City, Indiana. The project produced a series of oral histories, entitled "Getting There: Oral Histories About Transportation in Michigan City," combining videotaped and audiotaped versions and written typescripts. Completed sets are available at the Michigan City Public Library; the LaPorte County Historical Museum; and the Northwest Indiana Regional Archives, Indiana University Northwest at Gary, Indiana. Copies of the typescripts are also available at the Indiana Historical Society.


SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

"Getting There: Oral Histories About Transportation in Michigan City" was completed as part of an Indiana Heritage Research Grant (#93-3013) awarded to the Michigan City Public Library and the LaPorte County Historical Society in 1993. This collection consists of copies of oral history typescripts, which detail the history of railroading and aviation in Michigan City, Indiana.

Interviewees who discuss aviation include: Harry Frey, John Griswold, Dale Phillips, Darin Phillips, Joe Phillips, Tom Ringo, Burton Ruby, Al Spiers, Dorothy Verdos, George Verdos, and Rex Westphal. Those who talk about the city's railroads include: Lucius Donkle, Steve Eldridge, William Harris, Ed Hedstrom, Henry Kintzele, Jr., and Eugene Moldenhauer.

The oral histories are arranged alphabetically according to the interviewee's name.
