BIOGRAPHiCAL SKETCH

Libbie M. Albright was born circa 1858. Her parents were Joseph Reeder (b. 1830) and Margaret (nee Morris) Albright (b. ca. 1828). Libbie’s siblings included Harriet (b. ca. 1850) and Ella (b. circa 1853). The 1870 Indiana Census and indicates that Margaret was the head of the household, though Libbie’s diaries after 1872 mention “Papa.” The census lists Libbie as “Mary” Albright.

Libbie was a founder of the Good Templars Lodge, New Carlisle, Ind., and played organ for her church.

Maude Evans (b. 28 March 1878) may have been the child of Joseph Albright and Louisa McPhee. In 1870 Joseph was a saloonkeeper in La Porte, La Porte County, Indiana.

SCOPE AND CONTENT NOTE

The collection includes five diaries written by Libbie M. Albright of New Carlisle, Olive Township, St. Joseph County, Indiana between 1871-72 and 1874-76. The diaries discuss routine activities of the Albright family and social events in Olive Township. Diaries dating 1871-72 indicate that Libbie attended school regularly. She also helped her mother at home and looked after her young nephew, Charlie. Libbie’s other activities included ice-skating, visiting friends, and taking music lessons from “Mr. Shubert.” She later played the organ at her church. Most events are reported without emotion, though on 1 Sept. 1871 she reports that a fellow “threw a kiss at me and I made a face at him.” After 1872 Libbie spent much of her time sewing and attending prayer meetings. The 1875 diary mentions a meeting of the Good Templars on 4 Jan. 1875.

Other material in the collection was generated by Maude Evans, Libbie Albright’s niece. These items include a pocket Bible, and a letter and transmittal envelope from Maude in Dakota Territory to Ella Albright in Idaho Springs, Colorado. The letter (dated 10 Sept. 1885) is written in a child’s hand, and includes family news and personal questions. Maude inquires when Ella will be married, and if she has cut her hair since arriving in Colorado. Maude’s Bible is covered in green velvet and inscribed “Maude from Mrs. D. E. Warner, 8th Birthday, March 28, 1886.”
