    HISTORIC BUSINESS REGISTER

The Historic Business Register (HBR) program of the Indiana Historical Society was begun in November 1992; it provides special recognition to Indiana companies that have been in continuous business for 100 years or more. IHS provides recognition through press releases, receptions and public ceremonies (where Centennial Business Awards are presented slideshow of 2006 event), and, by the Register itself. This online reference publication that features illustrated historical sketches of Indiana's centennial businesses.

IHS also wants to encourage research and publication in Indiana business history by continuing to build an archive of company records, original photographs, and ancillary material (such as published commercial catalogs), all of which are related to individual companies and generally to the history of Indiana business.

A third goal of the program is to encourage an awareness by Indiana's citizens of their state's rich business and industrial heritage, and to invite all of Indiana's businesses to become part of IHS's continuing efforts to preserve that heritage.

More than 300 companies statewide have been honored thus far. Awards are presented annually at the Corporate and Foundation Recognition Dinner held in September of each year. Nominations and inquiries about inclusion in the Historic Business Register are sought and, indeed, welcomed.
